National Library Legislative Day (in May) brings librarians and others to Washington, DC to talk with their Representatives and Senators about issues of concern to the library community.

National Library Legislative Day

Thank you for Making Library Legislative Day a Success!

The Washington Office would like to extend special thanks to the librarians, friends of libraries, trustees, patrons and many library supporters who contributed to and participated in National Library Legislative Day 2006!

This year over 525 participants from 47 states came to Washington D.C. to speak with their Members of Congress about the needs of libraries in the areas of funding, telecommunications, copyright and government information. Over a hundred more library supporters participated in Virtual Federal Library Legislative day by calling, faxing letters, and emailing Congress on May 1st and 2nd.

Friends of Libraries U.S.A. (FOLUSA) presented Sen. Durbin (D-IL) and Sen. Craig (R-ID) with awards for their commitment to libraries. The Washington Office recognized Major Owens (D- 11th NY), a librarian, for his dedication to libraries. He is scheduled to retire this year.

Thank you for participating in National Library Legislative Day 2006. Your help and support has and will continue to make a positive impact on libraries across the nation.

Save the Date for 2007 and 2008!

Believe it or not, we are already making arrangements for National Library Legislative Day 2007. Although you might not be involved as a state coordinator in 2007, we are providing information about the event to help you begin to coordinate arrangements for your state delegation as early as possible:

(This is Tuesday & Wednesday, both years.  The briefing day will be held at the Holiday Inn on the Hill.)

Each year the Washington office reserves a room block at a discounted rate that is available until the block is filled. The block fills early, so you may want to make your reservations as soon as possible.

In 2008, Legislative Day will be held during the second week in May because a city-wide convention will occupy all available hotel and conference room space in D.C. and Virginia during the first week of May. We are anticipating that the convention will cause area hotels to fill quickly, and so we encourage you to make your 2008 hotel reservations as early as possible.

Please feel free to contact Erin Haggerty in the Washington Office if you would like more information about National Library Legislative Day.
