 Description: Leads the design, development and ongoing implementation of digital library operations that support  teaching and
research. Programs reporting to the DLTS Director include: digital library development, digital repository services, Digital Studio technology, digital reformatting, and tools/software that facilitate discovery and use of research resources. Collaborate closely with NYU ITS in the planning and development of systems for supporting the research portal, metadata management, searching support,
user interface, and repository services for library digital resources. Lead NYU Libraries in the development of global digital technology services. Provide on-going evaluation of current systems and research and recommend new digital initiatives. Develop and
implement policies and procedures and supervise administrative staff and manage internal and grant-funded budgets.
Qualifications: Seven or more years of increasingly responsible, professional experience including development of digital library services, planning, implementing and managing projects. Working knowledge of image capture and delivery technologies, full text mark-
up and searching methods and database management systems; in-depth knowledge of at least one of these areas. Knowledge of HTML, and SGML or XML; experience with CGI and knowledge of one or more of the following programming languages: SQL, C, C++,
Java and Perl. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills; ability to lead a collaborative team. Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.

HIRING SALARY: $51,500 +

Management/Administrative Operations:  Administer and coordinate all library services.  Develop and maintain consistent service policies.  Prepare and administer the Library budget.  Supervise and evaluate all full and part-time library faculty and staff.  Establish, analyze, and evaluate strategic and long-range plans for the library and the professional staff.  Supervise and maintain currency of library automation systems.  Provide for the security of library materials and the proper use of library facilities and equipment.  Supervise the allocation and expenditure of funds for print and non-print materials.  Insure the quality and balance of the collection according to accepted principles of collection development and management.  Prepare proposals and applications for externally funded grants.  Review and report annually on the activities of the Library.  Participate on appropriate college committees.  Develop and maintain the Repository of OCC Institutional History. Perform other duties assigned by the Executive Director of e-Learning. 

Financial Accountability:  Prepare and supervise all budgets for the Library. Approve all expenditures for the Library.

Public Relations/Communications:  Represent the Library and serve as the liaison to the College administration, faculty, staff and students and to the community.  Represent the College on relevant regional, state and local committees.  Maintain liaison with Directors of public libraries in Ocean County. 

Education/Training-Advising/Counseling:  Orient new library staff to the services of the library.  Provide training as needed.  Conduct regular library services staff meetings. 

Technical:  Be current in knowledge of and changes in library technologies.  Maintain appropriate competency in contemporary computer technology.

Required: Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution or an equivalent degree.  A minimum of three years progressively responsible administrative experience in academic libraries including planning, developing, and monitoring budgets, managing personnel, and implementing technology.  Ability to foster a collaborative and cooperative work environment.   Experience with evaluating and implementing emerging library technologies. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.  A verifiable record of advocacy for a teaching-learning library environment.  Commitment to professional and staff development.  Strong working knowledge of computer software including MS Word & Excel. 

Preferred:  Experience in grant proposal writing and/or administration. Previous experience in writing policies for a Library or related environment.

Faculty Position in Library and Information Science, Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA

Drexel University's College of Information Science & Technology (IST) invites applications for several tenure-track positions in Library and Information Science at the assistant, associate, or full professor level.  We welcome applications with a wide variety of teaching and research interests.

The successful candidate will have:

  • A completed doctorate in library and information science or a related field
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching and research
  • Interest in working with a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary faculty

Candidates for senior positions should have established research records and success in obtaining external research funding.  Joint appointments with other Drexel academic units are also a possibility.

We are particularly interested in applicants in the following areas:

  • Information representation and retrieval
  • Library management and leadership

IST continues to evolve as an innovative leader in educating information professionals in the twenty-first century, combining high quality teaching and research in a broad, multidisciplinary, and collaborative environment.  The MS(LIS) degree is highly ranked, both overall and for specializations in information systems and digital librarianship.  Faculty and student interests span a broad spectrum of library and information science areas.  Full-time PhD students are supported either through faculty research grants from the Institute for Library and Museum Services, the National Science Foundation, and other funding agencies, or through research or teaching related activities within the College.

The College is host to the Internet Public Library (IPL) (www.ipl.org).  Founded in 1995 as an LIS graduate student class project at the University of Michigan’s School of Information, the IPL has grown into a fully-realized Web-based public service organization and learning/teaching environment.  It serves as a teaching and research forum that unites the broad faculty interests across the College.

Metadata Librarian, Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA

Bucknell University seeks to hire a Metadata Librarian who will manage and coordinate activities related to metadata production for Bucknell’s growing digital collections.

S/he is responsible for the intellectual access to Bucknell’s digital collections, ensuring that users are able to find and retrieve materials, making recommendations for improving the intellectual access to digital objects, and implementing such changes. This individual will be responsible for metadata and associated authority control, quality control, knowledge of changing metadata standards, and other duties associated with the creation and maintenance of data related to both digital and print materials. While the primary focus of the work will be working with metadata for digital objects, this individual will also serve as a resident authority on traditional cataloging standards and emerging trends related to the intellectual access and organization of information.

REQUIRED: Master’s degree in Library Science or Information Science is required.

- Knowledge of existing and developing metadata schemas, standards, and protocols such as Dublin Core, VRA Core, LOM, MODS, METS, CCO, and OAI-PMH;  traditional cataloging rules and standards including MARC and AACR2; subject thesauri such as LCSH, ULAN, AAT, TGN, and MeSH; emerging standards such as RDA are required.
- Ability to adapt to changing digital technologies and metadata standards is required.
- Proficiency in standard computer applications, spreadsheets, databases, integrated library systems, the Internet, as well as traditional library resources is required.
- The ability to learn new systems and procedures quickly is required.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
- The ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, and in teams is required.
